Burnout and stress

Therapy for burnout and stress

If you are running on empty, therapy can help you understand what has been draining you and rebuild a pace you can actually keep. I am İlayda Aydın, a psychologist in Amsterdam, and I offer online therapy for burnout and stress in English and Turkish, drawing on CBT, Schema Therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction. A 50-minute session costs €90. We can start with a free 20-minute video call to see whether we are a good fit.

Signs you may be heading towards burnout

Burnout builds slowly, which is why it is easy to miss until it is loud.

  • Exhaustion that a weekend or a holiday no longer fixes
  • Feeling cynical, detached or numb about work you used to care about
  • Struggling to concentrate, forgetting things, making small mistakes
  • Irritability, poor sleep, headaches or getting ill more often
  • Finding it impossible to say no, or to stop when you are tired

How we work with burnout

First we look at your load honestly: work, life admin, caring for others and, for many internationals, the extra effort of living in a new country. Then we look underneath it. Schema Therapy often finds familiar patterns here, such as unrelenting standards or putting everyone else's needs first, and helps you understand where they began.

CBT gives you practical tools for boundaries, rest and the guilt that can come with doing less. I am trained in the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, and we use parts of it to help your nervous system settle.

If you are on sick leave

In the Netherlands, your employer's company doctor (bedrijfsarts) guides your recovery and return to work when you are off sick. Therapy with me can run alongside that process. I do not issue sick notes or medical certificates.

Frequently asked questions

They can overlap. If you notice low mood most days, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or feelings of hopelessness, talk to your GP as well, so nothing is missed.

Some employers have a budget for wellbeing, coaching or therapy. It is worth asking your HR department whether therapy sessions qualify.

No. Many people start therapy while still working, often to avoid reaching the point of sick leave.
